Continuous Flight Auger Piles

A brief description .

Continuous flight auger (CFA) piles are formed by boring into the ground and pumping concrete or grout through the stem of the auger to leave behind a wet cast column. The required reinforcement is then plunged into the pile. The installation of CFA piles creates minimal noise and is almost vibrationless. It is therefore the preferred option when piling in sensitive areas or adjacent to sensitive infrastructure.

CFA piles are formed by a single stroke of the auger and therefore the installation programme is accelerated. As the pile is formed in a single auger stroke, a tall rig is required for installation which often makes a CFA piles only suitable for open and unrestricted sites. If restrictions are present the sectional flight auger (SFA) method would likely be required as an alternative.

Pile Sizes Available

We install 300mm, 350mm and 400mm, 450mm 500mm and 600mm diameter CFA piles.

Pile capacity

Pile capacity varies greatly with ground conditions and pile diameter. 300mm diameter piles are often specified to support 300-400kN compressive load, although 600kN is achievable in the right ground conditions. Shear loads of up to 30kN are not uncommon for a 300mm diameter pile. 600mm diameter piles can support compressive safe working loads of 2,000kN or more and shear forces of over 100kN.

Installation Process.

Continuous Flight Auger (CFA) bored piles are installed by boring the ground to a pre-determined depth and pumping concrete through the stem of the auger as it is withdrawn. The piling rig will carry enough augers to enable the required depth to be achieved in a single stroke. Once the auger has been withdrawn from the bore a column of concrete is left in the ground which the required reinforcement is plunged into.

Reinforced Concrete and Underpinning

In addition to piling, we undertake all types of reinforced concrete works such as ground beams, floor slabs and pile caps. We can also provide costs for setting out, excavation works, piling attendances and spoil removal.

We design and install a range of underpinning systems including traditional underpinning, cantilever beams, knuckle piles and internal piled rafts.

    How did it begin?

    Oliver began his career in 2004 as a piling operative, gaining hands on experience in a variety of piling and underpinning techniques. In 2010 he attended the University of Brighton from which he graduated with a first class master’s degree in civil engineering. After graduating he joined Roger Bullivant Ltd and went on to manage both their South East and North West mini piling divisions. In 2022, Oliver became a chartered civil engineer and a registered ground engineering professional. Olivers unique development, from piling operative to chartered civil engineer, enables him to produce practical engineered solutions to the most challenging of projects.
