Dawson Foundation Engineering design and install screw piles for residential, commercial and temporary structures throughout the UK. Screw piles are steel foundation piles installed by rotating them into the ground — fast to install, low-disruption, and well suited to restricted-access sites. For a full explanation of how the system works and when it’s the right choice, see our guide to how screw piling works.
- Advantages
- Environmentally friendly – no concrete required
- Ideal for root protection zones – often the preferred piling method
- Quick installation
- Can be installed with handheld equipment
- No vibration and low noise
- Can be removed if supporting temporary structures.
- Can be loaded immediately upon installation
For a fuller breakdown of the benefits and limitations, read our guide to the advantages and disadvantages of screw piling.
Pile Size
Screw piles are commonly referred to by their shaft diameter excluding helices. We readily install two types of screw pile 60mm, 76mm and 89mm commonly known as 60R,76R and 89R.
For guidance on how installation depth is determined, see how deep screw piles go.
Pile capacity
Pile capacity is limited by the torque capacity of the screw pile and/or the amount of torque which can be applied on site. Often screw piles are installed by handheld equipment and therefore it is likely that the applied torque will be less than the torque capacity of the pile. Likewise, if installed by an excavator it is possible to apply enough torque that the ultimate capacity of the pile is exceeded and therefore the applied toque must be limited in this scenario. Typical safe working compressive loads for 60R screw piles are 50kN increasing to 150kN for 76R screw piles.
Screw Pile Costs
There’s no fixed cost for screw piling — pricing depends on pile size, depth, ground conditions and site access. Read our guide to screw pile costs in the UK for a full breakdown, or contact us for a free, no-obligation quote based on your project.
Reinforced Concrete and Underpinning
In addition to piling, we undertake all types of reinforced concrete works such as ground beams, floor slabs and pile caps. We can also provide costs for setting out, excavation works, piling attendances and spoil removal.
We design and install a range of underpinning systems including traditional underpinning, cantilever beams, knuckle piles and internal piled rafts.

EXCELLENT Based on 6 reviews Posted on Google Christopher EdwardsTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Dawsons were excellent on our complex project in Macclesfield. Site conditions were very tight with multiple trades in a small area inside a building. Oliver managed the project to make sure it ran smoothly. Also sorted out the changes to the design overnight to keep the job on track. Highly recommended.Posted on Google Anthony KoumiTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Thank you for your work Oliver & team. I didn’t have a clue when it comes to piling, I kept asking for advice before the work commenced and all questions were answered, I had two quotes, Oliver was not only cheaper but made me feel more comfortable - and SOCOTEC building control passed it all through without a problem.
