Hollow Stem Bored Piles Installed in Stockport Town Centre

Dawson Foundation Engineering recently completed a restricted access piling project in the heart of Stockport town centre, installing 34 No. 300mm diameter hollow stem bored piles to depths of up to 7.0m.

The piles were installed to socket into sandstone, providing the required foundation solution for the site while working within the constraints of a busy town centre location.

The Challenge

The site was located in a restricted access area within Stockport town centre, which created several practical challenges for the piling team.

Access for plant, materials and support equipment had to be carefully managed to minimise disruption and allow the works to progress safely. Due to the city centre location and the constraints around the working area, mobilisation and demobilisation of equipment were carried out during the early hours.

The available working space also affected how pile arisings could be handled. Rather than being removed from each pile position immediately, arisings were temporarily stockpiled and then relocated over completed pile positions as the works progressed across the site.

Dawson FE installed 34 No. 300mm diameter hollow stem bored piles, with pile depths extending up to 7.0m. The piles were designed to socket into sandstone, creating a suitable foundation solution for the proposed development.

Hollow stem bored piling was selected because it provided an effective method for this type of site, allowing piles to be installed accurately while working around the restrictions of the town centre environment.

The use of a suitable piling rig and careful site sequencing enabled the team to complete the works within the confined working area while managing the movement of arisings and equipment throughout the project.





Managing Restricted Access in a Town Centre Location

This practical approach allowed the piling works to continue efficiently despite the access limitations and the busy urban setting.
