What is Mini Piling?

Typically involving compact rigs and piles with a small diameter, mini piling refers to small-scale piling operations. It’s particularly suited to sites with limited access, low headroom, or where vibration and noise control are important, ideal for Cumbria’s rural properties, conservation zones, and tight village plots.

    Pile Sizes

Mini piles generally have diameters under 300mm.

At Dawson Foundation Engineering, we install piles ranging from 100mm to 600mm. This includes various types of piles, such as bored, driven, drilled, or screw piles.

Larger-diameter piles (over 300mm) are still often classed as mini piles if installed with small, lightweight rigs. Mini piling categorization is more about site logistics and rig size than diameter alone.

    Piling Equipment

Mini piling also describes the use of lightweight or compact piling rigs, usually under 20 tonnes in weight. These allow us to operate in areas with restricted/ difficult access, limited vertical clearance, or remote, uneven terrain, common in Cumbria’s rural and mountainous locations.

We can install deep where conventional rigs cannot operate, without sacrificing structural performance.

    Specialist Equipment Available in Cumbria

We operate a wide variety of specialist rigs and tools suitable for the diverse conditions found across Cumbria, including hard-to-access rural sites and low-headroom environments:

    • Grundomat Pile Driver: Ideal for extremely tight or remote access locations, our most compact installation tool.
    • Kitten Rigs: Capable of operating within structures, including residential properties. This is a compact and versatile option.
    • GP Services D500 Drop Hammer Rigs: Has a detachable power pack, meaning these rigs can be split from their engine unit, allowing flexibility to navigate enclosed or narrow environments.
    • KLEMM 709 Rigs: Enables quick and efficient installation of deep piles, even in constrained environments such as sites with limited headroom.
    • Hütte 204 Rigs: A robust rig, suitable for installing large-diameter piles where space is limited, but headroom is not a constraint.

Whether your project is in Kendal, Carlisle, Barrow-in-Furness, or the Lake District, we have the equipment and experience to get the job done right.
