What is Mini Piling?

Mini piling is a term widely used to describe small-scale piling operations, typically involving compact rigs and piles with a diameter of less than 300mm. It generally refers to both the installation equipment and the pile size.

This type of piling is ideal for residential, heritage, and rural projects across the Isle of Man, where access can be tight, ground conditions vary, and environmental sensitivity is often a priority.

    Pile Sizes

Mini piles are generally considered to be piles under 300mm in diameter. This includes a variety of pile types, such as bored piles, driven piles, drilled piles and screw piles.

At Dawson Foundation Engineering, we install piles ranging from 100mm to 600mm. While anything over 300mm typically exceeds the standard mini piling definition, these can still be considered mini piles when installed using compact rigs. Ultimately, access, logistics, and equipment type determine the classification more than diameter alone.

    Mini Piling Equipment

Mini piling also refers to the use of lightweight and compact piling rigs, typically under 20 tonnes. These rigs are designed for restricted or awkward access, low-clearance interiors or basements, or medium-scale sites requiring strength and depth.

This allows us to complete piling work where larger rigs can’t operate, without compromising on load capacity or structural integrity.
