Dawson Foundation Engineering provides specialist mini piling and foundation engineering services throughout Liverpool and Merseyside, supporting residential, commercial and industrial projects across Wirral, St Helens, Knowsley, Sefton and surrounding areas.
From restricted-access house extensions and underpinning works to commercial developments and specialist foundation projects, our in-house engineering and piling teams can design and install solutions around the ground conditions, structural requirements and access available on site.
With a versatile fleet of compact piling rigs and larger equipment, we can work on constrained urban sites, existing buildings and larger open projects, selecting the piling method and plant around the requirements of each individual site.
What is Mini Piling?
Mini piling uses compact piling equipment to install deep foundations where conventional foundations may be unsuitable. It is particularly useful on restricted-access sites, projects with limited headroom and locations where noise or vibration needs to be carefully controlled.
This makes mini piling suitable for many residential, commercial and industrial projects across Liverpool and Merseyside, particularly on constrained urban sites and existing properties.
Pile Sizes
Mini piles are typically associated with smaller-diameter piling installed using compact equipment, but the most suitable pile size depends on the project requirements, structural loading, ground conditions and access available on site.
At Dawson Foundation Engineering, we install piles from 100mm up to 600mm in diameter. Larger-diameter piles can still be installed using compact rigs where site access or working space is restricted, which is why mini piling is often defined as much by the equipment and site constraints as by pile diameter alone.
Mini Piling Equipment for Liverpool & Merseyside
Our piling fleet includes compact and specialist rigs designed for restricted-access, low-headroom and urban sites, as well as larger equipment for more open commercial and industrial projects.
This gives us the flexibility to work across a wide range of sites in Liverpool and Merseyside, from existing residential properties and city-centre locations to larger development sites where access is less restricted.
Applications of Mini Piling in Liverpool & Merseyside
Mini piling is suitable for a wide range of residential, commercial and industrial projects across Liverpool and Merseyside, particularly where access is restricted, ground conditions are variable or conventional foundations are not practical.
Our compact piling equipment allows us to work on constrained urban sites, existing properties and locations where neighbouring buildings, limited headroom or difficult access need to be carefully considered.
Typical applications include:
- Residential extensions and new-build projects
- Commercial and industrial developments
- Underpinning and foundation reinforcement
- Restricted-access urban sites
- Retaining walls and contiguous or king-post walls
- Internal piling and low-headroom projects
- Sites close to existing buildings or infrastructure
- Projects involving weak, variable or made ground
For larger developments and contractor-led schemes, Dawson Foundation Engineering also provides commercial piling services across Liverpool and the wider Merseyside area.

Specialist Piling Equipment for Sites in Merseyside
Our fleet includes compact and specialist piling equipment suited to a wide range of access, headroom and ground conditions across Liverpool and Merseyside.
This means we can select the most appropriate rig for each project, rather than forcing the site around the limitations of a single piece of equipment.
- Grundomat Pile Driver: Our most compact installation tool, suitable for very restricted or remote areas where larger plant cannot gain access.
- Kitten Rigs: Compact and versatile rigs that can operate within existing buildings and constrained residential sites.
- GP Services D500 Drop Hammer Rigs: Designed with detachable power units, allowing access through narrow entrances and tight working areas.
- KLEMM 709 Rigs: Suitable for deeper piling works on sites where working space or headroom is restricted.
- Hütte 204 Rigs: Capable of installing larger-diameter piles where lateral space is constrained but sufficient headroom is available.
Whether your project is in Liverpool, Wirral, Birkenhead, Knowsley, St Helens, Sefton or elsewhere in Merseyside, we can select piling equipment around the site conditions, access and foundation requirements.

How did it begin?
Oliver began his career in 2004 as a piling operative, gaining hands on experience in a variety of piling and underpinning techniques. In 2010 he attended the University of Brighton from which he graduated with a first class master’s degree in civil engineering. After graduating he joined Roger Bullivant Ltd and went on to manage both their South East and North West mini piling divisions. In 2022, Oliver became a chartered civil engineer and a registered ground engineering professional. Oliver’s unique career path, from piling operative to Chartered Civil Engineer, enables him to develop practical engineering solutions for even the most challenging projects.
