    What is Mini Piling?

Mini piling uses compact piling equipment to install deep foundations where conventional foundations may be unsuitable. It is particularly useful where access or headroom is restricted, or where neighbouring buildings and infrastructure require noise and vibration to be carefully managed.

These characteristics make mini piling particularly useful on many built-up residential and commercial sites across Manchester and Greater Manchester.

Piling Services Across Manchester & Greater Manchester

Our piling teams work throughout Manchester and the surrounding Greater Manchester boroughs, supporting projects ranging from domestic extensions and new-build properties to commercial developments, industrial works and specialist foundation schemes.

Urban projects can present particular challenges, including restricted access, neighbouring structures, limited headroom and the need to minimise noise or vibration. Dawson Foundation Engineering operates a versatile fleet of compact piling rigs alongside larger equipment, allowing the piling method to be selected around the individual site rather than the limitations of a single rig.

Depending on the ground conditions, structural loading and site constraints, solutions can include bottom-driven steel-cased piles, sectional flight auger piles, CFA piles, ODEX piles and screw piles.

    Restricted Access Piling in Stockport

Dawson FE recently completed a restricted-access piling project in Stockport town centre, installing 34 No. 300mm hollow-stem bored piles to depths of up to 7 metres.

The project demonstrates our ability to deliver engineered piling solutions on constrained urban sites where access and surrounding development influence both equipment selection and installation.

    CFA Piling in Wigan

Our Greater Manchester experience also includes CFA piling works in Wigan, where Continuous Flight Auger piles formed part of the foundation solution.

CFA piling can be particularly effective on suitable commercial and residential sites where efficient installation and low vibration are important.

    Pile Sizes

Mini piles are usually considered to be those with a diameter less than 300mm.

At Dawson Foundation Engineering, we install piles ranging from 100mm to 600mm.

While piles above 300mm are typically outside the strict definition of mini piling, they are often still classed as such when installed using compact piling rigs.

Ultimately, mini piling categorisation is more about site access, logistics, and rig size rather than just the diameter.

    Piling Equipment

Mini piling can also refer to the use of lightweight and compact rigs, usually under 20 tonnes. This allows us to complete work in environments with limited or tight access, low headroom, or medium-scale sites requiring greater power and depth capacity.

We regularly work on tight city-centre plots and inner-city Greater Manchester properties where traditional rigs cannot reach, without compromising on results.

    Residential Mini Piling

Mini piling can provide an effective foundation solution for house extensions, new-build homes, garages, underpinning and other domestic projects where poor ground or restricted access makes conventional foundations unsuitable.

    Commercial Piling

We support contractors, developers, engineers and commercial property owners with piling solutions for extensions, new structures, plant bases, retaining structures and other foundation engineering requirements throughout Manchester.

Applications of Mini Piling in Manchester

Due to the size of our versatile fleet of rigs, most of our work qualifies as mini piling. We can install piles up to 600mm in diameter using rigs under 20 tonnes, the ideal balance of power and manoeuvrability.

We provide a wide range of mini piling solutions for varied ground conditions found across Manchester and Greater Manchester. Our available pile types and standard diameters include:

Specialist Equipment Available in Greater Manchester

Our fleet includes equipment suited to everything from restricted-access residential sites to larger commercial projects across Manchester and Greater Manchester. This allows us to select equipment around the project’s access, headroom, pile size and ground conditions.

    • Grundomat Pile Driver: Ideal for extremely tight or remote access locations, our most compact installation tool.
    • Kitten Rigs: Capable of operating within structures, including residential properties. This is a compact and versatile option.
    • GP Services D500 Drop Hammer Rigs: Has a detachable power pack, meaning these rigs can be split from their engine unit, allowing flexibility to navigate enclosed or narrow environments.
    • KLEMM 709 Rigs: Enables quick and efficient installation of deep piles, even in constrained environments such as sites with limited headroom.
    • Hütte 204 Rigs: A robust rig, suitable for installing large-diameter piles where space is limited, but headroom is not a constraint.

Whether your project is in the heart of Manchester, Salford, Bolton, Bury or Wigan, we have the equipment and expertise to handle it.

    How did it begin?

Oliver began his career in 2004 as a piling operative, gaining hands on experience in a variety of piling and underpinning techniques. In 2010 he attended the University of Brighton from which he graduated with a first class master’s degree in civil engineering. After graduating he joined Roger Bullivant Ltd and went on to manage both their South East and North West mini piling divisions. In 2022, Oliver became a chartered civil engineer and a registered ground engineering professional. Oliver’s unique career path, from piling operative to Chartered Civil Engineer, enables him to develop practical engineering solutions for even the most challenging projects.
