What is Mini Piling?
The term mini piling is widely used across the piling industry to describe small-scale piling operations. While not a formally defined category, it generally refers to both the size of the piles and the equipment used to install them.
Pile Size
Mini piles are typically considered to be those with a diameter of less than 300mm. This can include various types of piles, such as bored, driven, drilled, or screw piles. At Dawson Foundation Engineering, we install piles ranging from 100mm to 600mm in diameter. While piles exceeding 300mm typically fall outside the conventional definition of mini piling, they may still be classified as such depending on the equipment used, as outlined below.
Piling Equipment
Mini piling may also refer to the use of compact or lightweight piling rigs, generally weighing less than 20 tonnes. These rigs are suitable for a broad range of applications, from installations in tight-access or low-headroom environments (e.g. through standard doorways), to medium-scale sites requiring greater power and depth capacity.
It’s worth noting that larger-diameter piles, even up to 450mm or more, may still fall under the mini piling category if installed using smaller rigs. The classification is often more about access, logistics, and rig size than strictly pile diameter.
Our Capability
At Dawson Foundation Engineering, the majority of our projects fall under the mini piling category due to the size and versatility of our in-house fleet. While our rigs are under 20 tonnes in weight, they are capable of installing pile diameters up to 600mm, providing a powerful combination of mobility and performance. This makes us ideally suited to tackle complex or constrained sites without compromising on structural integrity.
Applications of Mini Piling
We have a range of mini piling options available, providing solutions suited for:
- Residential and small-scale commercial projects
- Underpinning and foundation reinforcement
- Retaining walls (contiguous or king post)
- Internal works like mezzanine floors
- Sites with weak soils, dense granular soils, or contaminated ground
- Projects near watercourses or tree protection zones

Reinforced Concrete and Underpinning
In addition to piling, we undertake all types of reinforced concrete works such as ground beams, floor slabs and pile caps. We can also provide costs for setting out, excavation works, piling attendances and spoil removal.
We design and install a range of underpinning systems including traditional underpinning, cantilever beams, knuckle piles and internal piled rafts.
EXCELLENT Based on 6 reviews Posted on Google Christopher EdwardsTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Dawsons were excellent on our complex project in Macclesfield. Site conditions were very tight with multiple trades in a small area inside a building. Oliver managed the project to make sure it ran smoothly. Also sorted out the changes to the design overnight to keep the job on track. Highly recommended.Posted on Google Anthony KoumiTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Thank you for your work Oliver & team. I didn’t have a clue when it comes to piling, I kept asking for advice before the work commenced and all questions were answered, I had two quotes, Oliver was not only cheaper but made me feel more comfortable - and SOCOTEC building control passed it all through without a problem. ThanksPosted on Google Reece DugganTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Dawsons have just completed my job in Wigan.
