Mini Piling

Summary and Application.

We are specialist piling contractors, offering professional, reliable, and cost-effective piling solutions. Whether you’re planning a domestic extension, commercial development, or underpinning works, our team has the expertise and specialist equipment to deliver a tailored solution, even in restricted access or challenging ground conditions.

What is Mini Piling?

The term mini piling is widely used across the piling industry to describe small-scale piling operations. While not a formally defined category, it generally refers to both the size of the piles and the equipment used to install them.

Pile Size

Mini piles are typically considered to be those with a diameter of less than 300mm. This can include various types of piles, such as bored, driven, drilled, or screw piles. At Dawson Foundation Engineering, we install piles ranging from 100mm to 600mm in diameter. While piles exceeding 300mm typically fall outside the conventional definition of mini piling, they may still be classified as such depending on the equipment used, as outlined below.

Piling Equipment

Mini piling may also refer to the use of compact or lightweight piling rigs, generally weighing less than 20 tonnes. These rigs are suitable for a broad range of applications, from installations in tight-access or low-headroom environments (e.g. through standard doorways), to medium-scale sites requiring greater power and depth capacity.

It’s worth noting that larger-diameter piles, even up to 450mm or more, may still fall under the mini piling category if installed using smaller rigs. The classification is often more about access, logistics, and rig size than strictly pile diameter.

Our Capability

At Dawson Foundation Engineering, the majority of our projects fall under the mini piling category due to the size and versatility of our in-house fleet. While our rigs are under 20 tonnes in weight, they are capable of installing pile diameters up to 600mm, providing a powerful combination of mobility and performance. This makes us ideally suited to tackle complex or constrained sites without compromising on structural integrity.

    Reinforced Concrete and Underpinning

In addition to piling, we undertake all types of reinforced concrete works such as ground beams, floor slabs and pile caps. We can also provide costs for setting out, excavation works, piling attendances and spoil removal.

We design and install a range of underpinning systems including traditional underpinning, cantilever beams, knuckle piles and internal piled rafts.

    Pile Types and Available Diameters

We offer a comprehensive range of piling solutions to suit a variety of ground conditions and project requirements. Our available pile types and standard diameters include:

Specialist Equipment for Every Site Condition

We operate a diverse fleet of piling rigs and tools, enabling us to install piles efficiently across a wide range of site conditions, including restricted access and low-headroom environments.

    • Grundomat Pile Driver: Our most compact installation tool, the Grundomat can be manually carried by two operatives, making it ideal for extremely tight or remote access locations.
    • Kitten Rigs: Compact and versatile, these rigs are capable of operating within existing structures, including residential properties.
    • GP Services D500 Drop Hammer Rigs: Featuring a detachable power pack, these rigs can be split from their engine units, allowing greater flexibility when navigating through narrow or enclosed access points.
    • KLEMM 709 Rigs: Designed for performance in constrained environments, the KLEMM 709 enables the installation of deep piles quickly and efficiently, even on sites with limited headroom.
    • Hütte 204 Rigs: These robust rigs are capable of installing large-diameter piles on sites where space is limited but headroom is not a constraint, making them ideal for challenging urban or industrial locations.

Our fleet allows us to provide the right solution for your project’s specific requirements.

    How did it begin?

Oliver began his career in 2004 as a piling operative, gaining hands on experience in a variety of piling and underpinning techniques. In 2010 he attended the University of Brighton from which he graduated with a first class master’s degree in civil engineering. After graduating he joined Roger Bullivant Ltd and went on to manage both their South East and North West mini piling divisions. In 2022, Oliver became a chartered civil engineer and a registered ground engineering professional. Olivers unique development, from piling operative to chartered civil engineer, enables him to produce practical engineered solutions to the most challenging of projects.
